The Things You Should Never Keep In A Storage Unit

A storage unit can give you valuable extra space, but it is not a suitable place for everything you own. Certain items can create safety hazards, damage other belongings, attract pests, or violate facility rules and local regulations. Perishable food, flammable materials, valuable documents, and other restricted items may need completely different storage arrangements. Before filling your unit, it is worth checking what should stay out of it.

This article covers the items you should never keep in storage units in Dubai and why.

Perishable food and open food packages

Fresh produce, dairy products, meat, and cooked meals spoil quickly without proper refrigeration. Even sealed food packages attract rodents and insects when temperatures fluctuate or packaging develops tears. Avoid storing groceries, pet food, and open packets inside your unit. Dispose of expired items before packing, and keep approved nonperishable goods in airtight containers only when facility rules permit them.

Flammable liquids and hazardous chemicals

Petrol, kerosene, paint thinner, fireworks, propane cylinders, and certain cleaning chemicals pose serious fire or health risks. Leaks and fumes may endanger nearby units, while heat can increase pressure inside sealed containers. Never store these materials unless the facility explicitly permits a specific product under its safety rules. Keep hazardous substances in approved locations that meet local regulations.

Wet clothing and damp furniture

Moisture encourages mould, mildew, unpleasant odours, and fabric deterioration. Wet towels, damp mattresses, recently cleaned carpets, and humid wooden furniture may develop stains during storage. Dry every item thoroughly before packing, and inspect furniture for hidden moisture. Use breathable covers where appropriate, and avoid sealing damp belongings inside plastic bags because trapped moisture encourages fungal growth.

Valuable jewellery and important documents

Expensive watches, jewellery, passports, cash, original property deeds, and irreplaceable family papers deserve stronger protection than an ordinary storage unit offers. Theft, humidity, fire, or restricted access may put these possessions at risk. Keep essential documents in a secure location at home or in an appropriate safe deposit facility. Store digital copies of important paperwork securely as an additional precaution.

Living plants and animals

Storage units lack the ventilation, lighting, temperature control, and daily care that living things require. Plants may wilt without sunlight, while animals face severe risks when confined inside an enclosed space. Never leave pets, wildlife, or living plants in a storage unit. Arrange suitable care and housing before moving other belongings into storage.
